Escaping the war

Hi all. I am actually blogging for Nicole who is having technical difficulties. What she wanted to ask was....does anyone find it interesting that they escaped one war, but they created one of their own. What do you think?

A Challenge for you

I have loved the blogs so far, and our class discussions have been really great recently. However, much of what is being said is really just reiterating what has been discussed in class. My challenge to you is to start a new thread and bring up a topic that has not been discussed in relation to the novel. It does not necessarily have to be all about LOTF, but it should have something to do with it. For instance, it could be something you observed in school, either in our class, the halls, gym class, at a sporting event or the cafe, or it could be an observation about the book that no one has discussed yet.

Be insightful. You all have interesting things to say.......sometimes too much.....say some of those things here. Shock me with your knowledge.......make my English teacher's heart go pitter pat.

Could the boys be transforming into a more non human mindset?

On page 145, the beginning of chapter nine, Simon asks the group, "'What else is there to do?'" Golding follows up that question with, "Nothing replied." I took note of this because Golding does not refer to ten year olds as people; he refers to them as items, or things. This made me wonder if the boys are transforming into such an uncivilized state that they can no longer be considered people. Would they be able to revert to dealing with "real" people if rescued?

Is there evil within us all?

Hey guys....This subject came up in class today, but I want to continue. Do you think, as Simon says, that there is evil within all of us? Do each of us have a "beast" within? If you disagree, tell me why. If you agree, give me some examples. Remember, Jonah brought up a good point.....perhaps we don't actually show our "evil", but we show our "love" when protecting others.

Is Jack a coward?

In today's discussion, it was brought up that Jack is going to need to "man up" if they are going to survive. That he needs to stop being a coward and just kill the pig. He has a knife, but has been unable to use it. Do you think that Jack is truly a coward or do you think that he is just a 12 year old boy who is still operating under the "laws" and "rules" of a civilized society?
