Is there evil within us all?
Hey guys....This subject came up in class today, but I want to continue. Do you think, as Simon says, that there is evil within all of us? Do each of us have a "beast" within? If you disagree, tell me why. If you agree, give me some examples. Remember, Jonah brought up a good point.....perhaps we don't actually show our "evil", but we show our "love" when protecting others.

i do agree with jonah's point that someone may attack another out of the love that they have for that other person but i still believe that there is evil in everyone. Not everyone shows this evil, yet we all have the primal instinct to kill or be killed which, in my point of view, can lead to someone's dormant evil coming out and taking over the good side of someone.
I think that there is evil within all of us, but it is a matter or not if we show it. A figure like Simon does not present the evil in himself even though there could have been evil in him. At first the boys were not as you would say "evil" they were just boys goofing around and there actions did not mean any true harm to any other. The story progresses and the boys begin to release the evil within. This also ties in with not being civilized (losing their touch with civilization) and having savage tendancies. The Hunters commit a "rape" like killing of the mother pig(sow). The description used in the killing is to show it as a matter of violence, a rape being an act of violence alone, and not just of a hunt. It even says that the hunters had not done a kill like this before, they rammed a spear up the sow's rump and we stabbing her in other places that there was skin and then after they torchered her they killed her. That is the most violence we have seen in the book so far that is that descriptive and the hunters are beging to break out of there civilized shell and bring out the evil in all of them. They killed simon, one of their friends who was sacrificing himself for the good of other people, unconciously they knew that the it was simon crawling out of the bushed but the boys had a need for violence whichis their new game, their new excitment.
